Elina Saloranta's videowork Tango Lesson was shot at a dance practice. The camera concentrates on the dancers' upper bodies: their chests, shoulders and arms. To our surprise, the picture reveals that the woman is pregnant. The soundtrack has been made from the viewpoint of the child in the womb. The source for this is research data on the sounds heard by a foetus. Tango Lesson is an attempt to imagine how a child in the womb experiences dance. Another theme that emerges is the relationship between art and empirical science.
Tango Lesson was made as part of Elina Saloranta's postgraduate studies on the doctoral programme at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Saloranta's article "Tangon oppitunti - tutkielma empiirisen tieteen ja taiteen kohtaamisesta" (Tango Lesson - a study of an encounter between empirical science and art) can be read in Finnish in the exhibition space and on the museum's website (www.fmp.fi).
